Screven Baptist Church, Georgetown, recognized the ministry accomplishments of some of its Sunday school teachers Sept. 10: Cathy Thames, five years, Sunday school director; Jeanette Smith, five years, first and second grade assistant teacher; Stella Jacobs, 48 years, first and second grade teacher; and Doris Johnson, 18 years, teacher, Esther Class. Other Sunday school leaders with longtime ministry experience include Chispa Lewis (48 years), Jeanette Ward (46 years), Adline Bullard (20 years), Ava Bullard (15 years) and Collie Ward (10 years). After a GA recognition service held Aug. 27, the GAs and RAs of Rabun Creek Baptist Church, Gray Court, began meeting together in September in a co-ed program called “M&Ms” (Music and Missions). The newly formed group and their leaders will learn songs and be actively involved in missions.
Open Arms Baptist Church, Kershaw, held baptism services Aug. 20 at Lake Wateree. Pastor Thomas Sullivan, assisted by Wayne Barker, baptized Ashton Sullivan, Caleb Martin and Jeremy Roberts.
In 2007, Crescent Hill Baptist Church, Columbia, will be celebrating its 75th anniversary. The congregation has begun the celebration this year by purchasing a new steeple. The steeple, paid for in less than three months, was made possible by donations from former and current members and others who wanted to be a part of the celebration effort.
Clifton Williamson was recently ordained as deacon by Redds Branch Baptist Church, Aiken.
Churches of Lakelands Baptist Association, working with Connie Maxwell Children’s Home and the Lakelands Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, recently hosted HarvestFest, thought to be the area’s largest outdoor Christian youth event. Among the highlights were contemporary Christian bands Overflow, Awkward Romance and Soulstice, youth evangelist Steven Furtick, and a food court. With the financial sponsorship of the 48 Lakelands Association churches, various individuals, and several area businesses, the event was free to participants. Attendance numbered more than 1,300, and seven professions of faith were recorded. Church participation included 36 churches from Lakelands Association and 39 from outside the association. Lander University’s Baptist Collegiate Ministry also played a key role in the success of the event. Plans are already under way for HarvestFest ’07.
Mechanicsville Baptist Church, Darlington, baptized 25 new believers Aug. 27. Pastors Frankie Tanner and Rodger Martin stated that they are excited about the new Christian growth in the church and community.
First Baptist Church, North Myrtle Beach, recently held its second annual ocean baptism. A total of 12 people were baptized by John Gambrell and Dwain Hayes.
These mission teams from Jamestown Baptist Church, Conway, recently visited the country of Belize in Central America. The group included medical personnel who saw more than 400 patients. The mission teams also built a village medical center as well as a home for a woman who was blind. Additionally, the Jamestown mission teams conducted backyard Bible clubs and worship services. This was the church’s second mission project in Belize. The church has also sent volunteers to Honduras.
Terri Hines celebrated her birthday and 30 years of service as secretary at Brandon Baptist Church, Greenville, Oct. 1. The church gave her a dozen red roses and a gift certificate to her favorite restaurant. Hines joined Brandon Baptist in 1968. She became the church secretary in 1976 and has served with four pastors, beginning with Clyde Wright. She now serves as secretary with C. Wilton Maxwell. With Hines are current pastor C. Wilton Maxwell, left, and Benny O’Sheal, chairman of deacons.
South Carolina Campers on Mission held their fall rally at Calhoun Falls State Park, Sept. 8-10. There were a total of 60 members present. Members reported on mission project participation, upcoming mission trips, and other needs that have been requested. The next meeting for the group will be Jan. 6 at the South Carolina Baptist Convention building in Columbia. Persons interested in joining COM may attend. |
